Using This Site

Welcome to the Falls of the Ohio River State Park. This application allows you to use a GPS-enabled mobile device to locate selected fossils or view a slide show of fossils located on the boulders near the visitor's center. For help using this site, please select from the list below.

Falls Hikes & Locating Fossils with GPS

Two hikes ‐ the Upper and Lower Falls ‐ allow you to locate fossils with your GPS-enable mobile device. Your device may prompt you to allow this site to use your current location. Click Allow or Yes in order to view your current location on a map of the hike. The Home screen and this Help screen are available from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

You can attempt to locate a fossil simply by walking so that your position on the map coincides with a fossil's tear-drop shaped marker, but typical mobile devices only have an accuracy of 5-15 feet when used in the park. For each stop on the hike, two camera markers indicate the location of a picture taken approximately 50 feet (red circle) and 25 feet (camera in green circle) from the fossil. Clicking any of the three markers for a stop reveals a picture taken at that location. Clicking the picture will allow you to see a high-resolution view of the image. To navigate to a different stop, click on a different fossil marker or use the next and previous fossil markers displayed on the side of the map.

Easy Access Hikes & Slideshows

Two hikes in the grassy area near the visitor's center allow access to those with disabilities and dry paths when the river is too high for the other Upper or Lower Falls hikes. These easy-access hikes consist of a series of boulders containing a rich array of fossils. To assist you in locating fossils on these boulders, pictures of the boulders and the fossils from various distances have been arranged in a slideshow for each hike. On the slideshow screen, you may click the forward or backward arrows to switch between slides or swipe to the left or right on touchscreen devices. The Home screen and this Help screen are available from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
